About this work
Western Roadmap, 1991- shows a painted sheet where Helen Frankenthaler soaks thin colour into paper, leaving open areas and a few darker stains. The work belongs to the abstract colour field painting movement, where paint runs into the sheet instead of sitting on top. A single mark runs along the lower edge while most of the field stays open.
The print on fine art paper arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame to buy. The matte paper keeps the open washes flat and stops glare from lamps.
It fits a quiet hallway above a long bench. From the doorway you see the open field first. Stand close and the thin mark at the bottom becomes the part you notice.
