About this work
White Line #2 - 1968 by Adolph Gottlieb puts a clean white band across a coloured field. The stripe runs with hard edges, a simple linear mark on a painted ground. Gottlieb worked with strong colour areas and clear painted divisions.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The frame sits against the white band without competing with it. The dark ground of the print stays near the wood finish, so the line stays the main thing you see.
In a dining room with a south facing window, the white line catches the afternoon light. From the table you notice the straight edge first. The wall behind stays flat and the print keeps its simple shape at that distance.
