About this work
White Portal - 1967 shows a pale sheet with thin washes of white and grey. The marks run in loose bands and fade out at the edges. The work stays quiet and open.
Helen Frankenthaler used thin paint that soaks into the sheet, a method tied to post war colour field painting. You see a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the white tones flat and stops any shine from a lamp.
The frame gives the sheet a clean edge so the open field reads without distraction. It works on a long hallway wall where the light comes from one side. From the far end you notice the soft grey lines before the white field fills in.
