About this work
The title Woman, 1950- points to a figure study from Helen Frankenthaler early years. Broad washes of thin colour sit on the sheet, with edges that stay open. The shapes read as a person from a distance, then break into stains and marks up close.
The fine art frame has a clean edge that holds the image together. A white frame keeps the open colour washes clear and avoids a dark line cutting through the stains. From the door you see the broad shapes first, then the thin marks when you stand close.
It fits a plain hallway wall where the light stays even. At eye level the washes read as a figure, and the frame edge keeps the picture separate from the wall. Step back and the whole sheet settles into one quiet field.
