Hans Hartung

Hans Hartung (1904–1989) was a German-French painter and one of the foremost figures of Art Informel and Tachisme — the European postwar movements that prioritized gestural, spontaneous mark-making as direct expression of inner experience. Working with brushes, rollers, sticks, and scrapers, Hartung created dynamic compositions of bold, sweeping strokes that seem to capture pure movement and energy on canvas. After serving in the French Foreign Legion during WWII — losing a leg in battle — he resumed painting and gained international recognition in Paris. His works are held in major collections worldwide. Hartung's prints add visceral energy and bold graphic presence to modern interiors.
