Drypoint Ocean Surface 1983 repeats the same wave line many times in dense rows across the paper. Vija Celmins draws the sea as a surface of marks, not as a picture with a horizon. The surface reads as a stretch of grey water with small ridges running left to right.

This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. You place the sheet on the hook and the wave lines sit level on the wall.

It works above a desk in a study where a lamp gives a steady light from the side. The repeated waves stay soft at that distance and the paper does not shine.
