Fox Gate

Fox Gate - 1982 opens on a row of painted colour bands that cross the sheet from side to side. The bands step through different hues in a steady sequence. Gene Davis built his practice on this kind of colour field strip painting. The picture keeps the horizontal stripe motif plain and uncluttered.

This object is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The print rests on the paper surface without gloss, so the bands hold their flat tone. A back panel gives the piece a firm edge.

It fits a kitchen wall near the table where morning light hits the bands from the side. You notice the step in hue from one band to the next while the kettle boils.
