About this work
Mandoline - 2004 shows a musical instrument pressed into a tight block of marks. The shapes run together and the surface feels built up from repeated layers. Arman worked with found objects, and the picture follows that practice of assembling and pressing forms into a single surface.
The fine art print uses a matte paper that keeps the tones steady under a lamp. A white frame gives the block a clean line on the wall, so the darker edges of the marks stay separate from the room around them.
On a kitchen wall near the counter, the stacked shapes read from the doorway first. When you stand by the sink, the small ridges in the block become clear and the white frame cuts a hard line against the painted plaster.
