About this work
Plane Trees at Ceret 1920 shows a row of tall trees with broad trunks and leafy crowns against a pale sky. The brushwork is rough and uneven, with thick paint marks built up on the surface. Chaim Soutine worked in an expressionist style, often using heavy, swirling strokes to shape trees and fields.
The object is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel, so the image sits behind glass and the edges stay clean. The matte paper keeps the darker greens and browns soft instead of shiny, which suits the uneven paint look.
It hangs on a kitchen wall above the sink, where the morning light falls across the leaves and the trunks stand out from the pale ground.
