Reefs by Sam Francis

Underwater gardens sprawl across the paper. Sam Francis’s *Reefs* lays them bare in ink and wash. Aquamarine pools bleed into pale mauve, edges blurred as though seen through moving water. Thin black lines sketch coral branches, while ochre smudges suggest distant sandbars. The white of the sheet never quite disappears, letting light filter through like sunlight on a shallow seabed. Hang it where morning light glances off the frame—hallways, breakfast nooks, or above a pale wood console.
