Nicolas de Stael was a French painter of Russian origin who evolved from pure abstraction to a luminous semi-abstraction of thickly painted, knife-applied colour that evokes football players, seascapes, and Mediterranean light with extraordinary immediacy. His rich, tactile surfaces represent one of the high points of post-war European painting.
