About this work
Escalator 1970 by Richard Estes shows a moving staircase caught in shop windows and glass reflections. The picture reads as a study of light on metal and mirrored surfaces. You see the repeating steps and the reflections of people caught in the glass.
The work arrives as a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The printed image sits flat under the glass, so the hard edges of the architecture stay clear and the reflections do not blur.
A stairwell landing with strong daylight works well here. From the bottom step you read the repeated lines of the escalator, and from the landing you see the small figures caught in the glass.
