About this work
Split Ring Image 1 2009 draws a thin ring shape that folds back on itself. The line is drawn with a steady hand and sits on a plain ground. You can see where the pencil slows and lifts at the curve. Robert Mangold keeps the mark simple and direct.
The paper is matte and the light grey tone stays soft under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the ring shape stand out without shine. The print is a fine art reproduction made to show the drawn line clearly.
It fits above a desk in a study where the desk lamp throws a small pool of light on the paper. From the chair you read the loop first and then notice the slight change in pressure along the path.
