The Third — Fine Art

The Third by Barnett Newman places a broad colour field beside a narrow vertical band. The painted mark holds a strong position in the sheet and leaves most of the ground open. The eye enters at the band and moves across the plain space.

A fine art print on matte paper keeps the colours even and the surface dull, so the band does not glare under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.

On a plain hallway wall hung level with the floor, the band reads as a single firm mark from the door. From the bench at the end of the hall, the open field stays quiet and the mark stays clear.
