Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter who charted an independent path between the social realism of the muralists and European modernism, creating richly coloured, cosmic, and sensuous canvases that draw on pre-Columbian Mexican culture and universal human themes. His powerful, lyrical works are among the finest in 20th-century Latin American art.
