A red band crosses the sheet and breaks into smaller strokes. The paint sits on the surface in uneven patches. 211990 - 1990 leaves room around the marks so the surface stays open. Emil Schumacher built his work from broad gesture and plain colour. You can see the hand in the uneven edges.

The fine art version uses a frame finish that can follow the room. A light frame on a dark wall lets the reds read clearly. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the marks steady under flat light. The matte surface holds the soft reds without shine.

It fits a hallway landing with one bare bulb overhead. From the stair landing you read the red band first. Up close the brush edges show the speed of the hand.
