About this work
Italian Beach, 1960- shows a wide band of sea tone laid over a pale ground. Thin colour washes spread out and thin at the edges, a method Helen Frankenthaler used to let paint soak into the surface. The marks stay open and the ground shows through.
The fine art print sits on a light matte paper, so the sea tone reads flat and the pale ground does not catch a bright lamp. A light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture keeps the edge quiet with this image.
You hang it on a plain hallway wall at shoulder height. From the door you see the broad wash first, then the thin edge where the paint thins out. The fine art copy stays calm at that distance.
