A dark band of red and black sits over a lighter ground in No. 21 - 1949.

The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The two tones meet without a hard line, and the lower field fades out at the edge. Mark Rothko built these works by layering thin washes, so the colour stays uneven instead of flat.

The paper stays matte on the surface, which keeps the dark tones from shining under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room, so a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture both work. It fits on the wall beside the bed, where the dark band catches the low evening light from the side window.
