About this work
No. 8 - 1964 is a colour field painting by Mark Rothko. The work shows large rectangular fields of deep maroon and black stacked across the sheet. The edges between the fields blur, so the colours seem to breathe into each other. The surface does not shine.
The fine art print sits on a wall near a doorway where light from the hall falls across the lower band. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the maroon from sinking into the background. A wood frame beside wooden furniture lets the black field hold its line.
In a study above a desk, the maroon field fills the view when you sit down. The black band stays steady at the top. The blurred edge softens when you look from the chair.
