About this work
Stations of the Cross 1958 1966 is a series of black and white images by Barnett Newman. Each panel holds a number and a plain ground. The work belongs to the abstract expressionism period and the colour field painting movement. The subjects are religious scenes reduced to simple marks.
The fine art print shows the black fields and white spaces without shine. The matte paper lets the numbers read clearly and the flat tones stay even.
Above a low desk the panels read as a row of quiet signs. From the door the black fields stay deep and the white lines stay open. Up close the pencil marks in the margins show the hand that made them.
