About this work
Yellow, Charcoal, Brown - 1953 holds broad painted bands stacked on the sheet. The upper field carries a yellow tone, the middle zone turns to charcoal, and the lower band settles into brown.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. Each field blends softly into the one below it. You see the shift most clearly across the room, where the bands read as flat colour.
Up close the paint seems to hover near the surface of the paper. Mark Rothko worked in this way, building colour field painting from layered rectangles with blurred edges.
