About this work
Townscape 1968 1 shows a stretch of buildings seen from a distance, with roofs and walls laid out in thin bands. The picture reads like a photograph caught in paint, a method Gerhard Richter used for much of his work. Grey and faded tones hold the scene together.
The object here is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The flat paper keeps the painted look even, so the bands across the buildings do not pick up shine under indoor lamps. You get a ready to hang piece when the frame is assembled.
It sits on the landing wall beside the stairs, where you notice the horizontal lines first from the bottom step. The grey tones stay calm against the white paint on the plaster.
