About this work
Jennifer Bartlett built her practice on small enamel squares laid in rows, a quiet method of hard edge painting she kept across many years. Summer - 1972 follows that work with flat colour blocks set in a steady field. The marks sit close together and the tones shift at each block line.
This fine art print is on a matte sheet where the greys stay soft and the colours do not shine. A light frame suits a dark wall, while a wood frame sits beside wooden furniture. The paper takes the flat colour without glare, so each block keeps its own tone.
It fits a bedroom wall above a slim desk. From the bed you see the long rows of blocks first. When you stand near the bed the small shifts between tones become clear.
