About this work
Maple - 1980 by Kenzo Okada is a soft abstract painting from the Japanese post war period. The title points to a maple leaf, a common subject in Okada work where forms often blur into a quiet field. A pale wash moves across the sheet and a few darker tones drift near the edge.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print comes on matte paper so the pale tones stay even and there is no shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the leaf shape read first, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture keeps the room steady.
It works on the stairwell wall where the light changes through the day. From the landing you notice the leaf shape first, and closer in you see the soft transitions in the paper.
