About this work
No.1-1949 uses two broad colour bands stacked on the sheet, a darker field near the top and a warmer one below. Mark Rothko built these painted panels with layered washes rather than sharp lines. The paint shifts where the layers overlap, so the boundary between the two fields is not hard.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The frame in white gives the image a clean edge and lets the painted bands stand on their own.
In a study room with a desk facing north, the upper band catches the steady light and the lower band stays quieter. You notice the slow change between the two fields before you see the frame edge.
