Thin lines and small marks run across the sheet in Untitled - 1965 by Jimmy Ernst. The marks sit on the paper in a loose arrangement with no hard edge or centre. Jimmy Ernst worked in a post war abstract style that came out of dada chance methods.

The fine art print keeps the small marks readable on the paper. A light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall lets the ground stay open. Wood beside wooden furniture gives the sheet a settled place.

On a stairwell wall the thin lines hold from the landing. From the upper step you read the loose pattern. Up close the small marks show their own spacing on the paper.
