Pompeys Head

Pompeys Head - 1958 keeps its subject close to the picture plane. A painted head sits against a quiet ground, with paint moved by hand across the surface.

The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The work belongs to the colour field painting practice that shaped post war american painting. The back carries a metal hanger that goes onto a nail or screw. You do not need a frame.

The print is matte, so the painted tones stay soft and do not shine under a lamp. A reading corner works well here. From the door you see the painted head and the pale ground, and the small shifts in tone stay clear.
