About this work
Untitled by Jean-Paul Riopelle shows a dense field of quick strokes laid down in oil on canvas. The painter worked on the ground with a large brush or a stick. Bits of colour sit close together and build a rough surface. The aim seems to be speed and force, not smooth edges.
This fine art reproduction keeps the texture of those strokes flat and even. A matte sheet holds the darker tones without a shine. You can stand near it and catch the individual lines, or step back and the strokes blend into one field.
It works on a brick wall in a hallway, just below the handrail. From the stairs you see a block of colour and movement. At the landing you notice the small gaps where one stroke ends and another begins.
