A Big Manor

A Big Manor - 2001 shows a cluster of pale buildings set against a sky of soft grey washes. Wu Guanzhong draws thin lines over the washes to mark roofs and walls. The marks stay simple and the field stays quiet.

The fine art paper is matte and does not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall makes the grey washes sit apart from the background. The frame finish can follow the room, so the wood grain or the paint tone stays close to what is already there.

On a narrow landing wall, you stand a step away and see the roof lines first, then the washes behind them. The marks stay clear from that distance and the pale buildings hold their shape against the darker paint on the plaster.
