Maurice Utrillo was a French painter celebrated for his atmospheric, melancholy depictions of the streets, churches, and cafes of Montmartre and the Paris suburbs, rendered in a chalky, white-dominated palette that gives his works a distinctive ghostly beauty. Son of artist Suzanne Valadon, his poetic streetscapes are among the most evocative in French art.
