About this work
Arc of Petals 1941 turns painted shapes into a line that curves above the page. Alexander Calder made his name from standing mobiles that move with air, and the picture carries that same sense of balance in a still picture. The paint stays thin so the bend of the line reads first, before the colour settles.
The white frame edge keeps the curve from fading into the paper edge. Fine art printing lays the flat colours down in even layers, so the petal shape holds its simple form without a glare.
On a bedroom wall you see the curve first, then the soft red tone when you move closer. The line stays loose over the plain field, and the picture holds its place without asking for attention.
