About this work
Before the Caves, 1958- by Helen Frankenthaler shows two broad washes of colour meeting across the sheet. The top band is a thin layer of blue, the lower band a warmer tone.
No hard lines separate them. fine art prints keep the colour flat and even, so each wash reads the same from across the room.
The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. On a pale wall in a quiet study, the blue sits near eye level and the warm band drops toward the floor. From the doorway the two bands read as one shape, up close the thin edges show the paint soaking into the surface.
