About this work
Black Friar - 1978 by Gene Davis shows stacked bands of paint running from one side to the other. The stripes step through dark tones and one thin light band breaks the rhythm. A single edge stays sharp while the next one fades a little. You see the painted surface in the bands.
This fine art print keeps those painted bands readable because the paper stays dull. The lack of shine keeps the dark tones steady under a lamp. You can match the frame to the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside timber furniture.
In a hallway the bands run along the wall and you notice the tone change as you walk past. The dark section holds the eye first, then the lighter band pulls you forward to the end of the wall.
