Black Note by Adolph Gottlieb (1971)

A black oval hovers above a black rectangle. This is Black Note, Gottlieb’s 1971 distillation of form and silence. The oval is matte, its edges softly feathered into the white ground. Below it, the rectangle sits sharp and flat, a counterweight of pure geometry. No brushstrokes compete; the contrast is the only drama. Hang it where afternoon light skims the wall—above a console, beside a doorway—so the shapes cast faint, shifting shadows.
