Bridges — Fine Art

Bridges - 1996 by Helen Frankenthaler shows soft colour washes spread across the sheet with a few thin lines. The painted areas run from one side to the other and sit near each other without hard borders. Across the room the washes read as broad colour shapes. Up near the picture the thin lines and the soaked edges of the paint become clear.

The fine art frame is finished in white and gives the picture a clean edge against the painted ground. The plain frame line keeps the colour fields open and lets the lighter washes stay soft against the wall.

In a narrow hallway the picture hangs on the side wall and the colour bands lead the eye down the passage. From the landing you see the broad washes first and the thin lines only when you stand close.
