California Coast

California Coast by Eyvind Earle shows a shoreline with low hills and a strip of sea in the distance. The shapes sit flat against the paper, with hard edges between the land and the water. Dry brush and strong outlines are part of Eyvind Earle work.

The fine art print uses a matte sheet, so the flat colour areas do not reflect light from a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the horizon line clear, and a dark frame on a pale wall makes the blue band stand out.

On the hall wall beside the coat hooks, the sea band reads first when you pass through. Closer to the mirror you can see the tree shapes on the slope. The print stays on that wall through the afternoon.
