About this work
Two large colour fields stretch across Cathedral, 1982- by Helen Frankenthaler. The eye moves from one opening rectangle to the next. Empty space holds the shapes rather than filling every part of the surface. The artist worked with thin colour washes that soak into the ground.
The fine art print uses a matte paper so the colour stays flat and soft under a room light. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the field readable, while a dark frame on a pale wall pulls the eye in.
It hangs at eye level in a quiet study room. From the desk chair you read the open rectangles first, then the thin border between them. The space behind the shapes stays calm.
