About this work
Cinque Per Cinque Venticinque 1983 shows numbers laid out in a grid on a plain field. Small painted marks sit between the figures. The setup reads like a counted list rather than a scene.
Alighiero Boetti made these grids by hand, one square at a time. From across the room the numbers form a steady block. Up close you see the pencil lines and the uneven edges of each mark. The fine art frame in white gives the picture a clear line on the wall.
The white edge keeps the grid from fading into the plaster. In a bedroom the grid sits above the bed. The white frame matches the painted headboard. From that spot the numbers read as a quiet pattern rather than a list.
