Citadel — Fine Art

Citadel - 1962 by Gene Davis shows stacked colour bands running across the sheet. Each band has a different width and a different hue. The pattern stays hard edged and steady from one side to the other. It reflects a colour field practice where vertical stripes carry the whole picture.

The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The frame sits in white, wood, dark wood or black and gives the print a clean edge on the wall. A white frame keeps the edges soft against these bands, while a black frame puts a firm border around the colours.

In a narrow hallway the stripes lead the eye down the passage. From the far end the bands read as flat colour, and from the coat hook the gaps between them become clear.
