Cityscape I — Fine Art

Cityscape I by Richard Diebenkorn shows buildings reduced to flat shapes and pale coloured bands. The painted rectangles stack across the sheet and the eye moves from one block to the next. Much of the ground stays open between them.

The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. Richard Diebenkorn worked in this abstract way with city scenes. A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale shapes read clearly. The print is on matte paper so the soft painted tones do not shine.

The same set of shapes keeps its calm feel in a hallway. From the bend in the corridor you see the stacked forms in one glance. Up close the thin pencil lines under the paint show through.
