About this work
Clandestine Game XI - 1968 shows a tight arrangement of black lines and small shapes on a white ground. The marks feel planned, like moves made on a board. Omar Rayo built his abstract drawings from careful geometry and a steady hand. The layout stays close to the paper, so the eye finds each shape one by one.
This fine art print sits on matte paper, which keeps the black tones quiet and stops glare from a ceiling light. A light frame on a darker wall lets the white ground stay open and readable.
From the foot of a stairwell the black shapes read as a row of small signs. You stand a few steps down and notice the spacing between the marks before the rest of the room.
