Claustral by Morris Louis (1961) — Framed

Four vertical bands of color bleed downward. Claustral, 1961, is the name Louis gave this quiet riot of diluted acrylic. The leftmost stripe is a pale ochre, almost the color of old parchment. Next comes a muted slate, then a deeper indigo that darkens toward the bottom. The rightmost band is barely there�ghostly white with a faint blush of rose. They run parallel, never touching, yet each seems to pull the others into sharper focus. Hang it where morning light can slide across the glass. A narrow hallway or the wall above a low credenza lets the colors breathe without competition.
