About this work
Cliff near Pourville shows a rocky sea edge with pale sky above and a narrow strip of water below. Short coloured strokes follow the slope of the land. The scene belongs to the impressionist outdoor painting period, where painters worked outside to catch quick changes in the air.
The fine art print uses matte paper so the pale blues and greys stay dull and do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall makes the bright part of the painting stand out. A dark frame on a pale wall pulls the eye to the rock shapes.
It fits on a narrow stairwell wall where you pass each day. From the bottom step you see the slope of the cliff and the thin line of sea. The short strokes read as rough ground from that distance.
