About this work
Color Chart No 139 1 1966 shows a grid of small colour patches laid out in rows. The patches range through blue, yellow, red and grey. Each square holds one colour, and the grid covers the whole sheet. Gerhard Richter made this kind of chart as a test of colour.
This fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel. The surface is flat and matte, so the colour patches do not glare under a lamp.
On a dining room wall, the grid of patches sits above a table. From the doorway you see the rows of colour, and up close you notice the thin edge between one square and the next. The colours stay separate and do not run into each other.
