About this work
Composition - 1958 shows stacked colour fields cut by sharp lines. Serge Poliakoff often builds his paintings in layers, letting one tone sit against another until the surface feels held together. The blocks of colour push and pull across the sheet.
The fine art print uses a white frame that gives the picture a clear edge against the image. The white line does not fight the colour blocks. It keeps the edge neat and lets the tones stay open.
In a bedroom, the print hangs on the wall beside a desk. From the doorway you see the colour blocks, and from the bed you notice the sharp lines between them.
