David Hockney by David Hockney uses strong outlines and soft washes set side by side. The mark shows clear pressure where the brush meets the paper, then a lighter touch where the colour thins out. You see the speed in the stroke direction.

The piece is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The paper holds the washes without soaking them in, so the colour stays where the brush left it. A light behind the picture does not make the surface shine.

It works on a hallway wall between two doors where the air moves past. From the hall you notice the outline shapes first, then the soft colour fills. The frame sits flat against the plaster.
