Diamond Shoal — Fine Art

Diamond Shoal is a sea study with a long low horizon. The water takes the grey and green tones of a rough open sea. Winslow Homer paints the waves with broad strokes that hold the shape of the water. The scene looks calm but the water carries some movement.

The fine art sheet uses matte paper so the pale greens stay dull and there is no shine under a ceiling light. A dark frame on a pale wall pushes the sea colours forward. The same fine art sheet can sit on a darker wall with a light frame.

It works on a hallway wall near the stairs, where you pass it twice a day. From the landing you see the grey water and the long horizon line. Up close the painted strokes hold the shape of the sea.
