About this work
Easter and the Totem shows a busy field of lines laid down across the page. The painting uses the drip method of Jackson Pollock to put down streams of paint that cross and weave. Colours spread over the surface without a single fixed shape.
The image belongs to the New York School and follows the abstract expressionist practice of working by hand on a large canvas. A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel holds the picture for display.
The frame holds the print flat and the back panel keeps it ready to hang on a wall. A hall wall with a steady lamp lets the lines show their crossings without glare. From the bottom of the hall you see the spread of paint streams and the way they pile up.
