About this work
Eighth Stone 1968 by Lee Bontecou uses a dark scraped surface with small openings and thin lines. The marks press hard and then lift, leaving a rough path across the image. The work holds a scraped quality rather than a painted one.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel shows these marks without gloss. The matte face keeps the dark tones soft, so the scraped lines read as surface rather than shine.
On a hallway wall near the front step, you notice the small openings first, then the darker band behind them. From the landing the rough path leads the eye along the wall.
