About this work
Etude Pour le Bonheur de Vivre 1905 by Henri Matisse sets bright colour fields against each other in a loose composition. The painted areas sit side by side with brush marks left visible on the surface. Henri Matisse arranged the shapes to suggest a figure inside a warm interior.
A fine art print carries the image on matte paper so the bold reds and greens stay flat under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
On a pale bedroom wall hung at eye level, the bright red field reads first from across the room. From the bedside you notice the loose brush strokes along the edge of the green shape.
